Based on the Chilean documentary “The Mole Agent” Remake of The Mole Agent (2020)
Story
Charles, a retiree, gets a new lease on life when he answers an ad for a private investigator and becomes a spy in an undercover investigation at a nursing home. Writing a review of this show requires familiarity with the context and content. Having three parents dealing with the challenges of assisted living made it more enjoyable and poignant.
His boss, Lilah Richcreek Estrada as Julie, is a black-and-white, anything-goes-to-solve-the-case kind-hearted, sarcastic foil to Danson’s kind-hearted and square Charles
Ted Danson plays an octogenarian widower (Charles) who is struggling to establish a new routine after his wife passes away due to health issues related to dementia. Through a series of classic sitcom plot devices, Charles lands a job as an undercover detective at an assisted living facility (what used to be called a “nursing home”) to solve a jewelry heist. The two are quickly put at odds with the facility’s director (well-played by Stephanie Beatriz as Didi), Charles’ daughter Emily (Mary Elizabeth Ellis), and the various residents and their many silly problems.
The awkward banter between Charles and the head of the facility, Julie, is hilarious
There are several poorly conceived scenes focused on older women being perverted that don’t fit into the rest of the storylines, and Charles’ daughter’s three outrageously disrespectful (and interchangeable) teenage sons are distracting and disposable. The best parts are Charles’ slow immersion into his new community with some social connections with the other residents, especially Caleb, played by Stephen McKinley Henderson. Also fun are the jokes and pointed commentary on assisted living and the things that go on there.
Overall, I recommend it, especially for viewers in their 40s and older
And while daughter Emily’s home life isn’t all that interesting, it does set up some excellent scenes between her and Charles in later episodes. The ending isn’t too hard to figure out (who stole what and what will happen to Charles), but the emotional parts of Charles waking up and coming to terms with his wife’s death are well worth watching. There are a few small roles played by older stars (Sally Struthers, Veronica Cartwright) that might make older viewers smile, but they’re wasted on pointless jokes about old people and sex.
