Story
In 1985, devout Father Bill Furlong uncovers disturbing secrets kept at the local convent and discovers shocking truths himself. While Cillian Murphy was discussing the possibility of working again with Tim Mielants, Murphy’s wife suggested that the novel “Small Things Like These” be made into a film. After acquiring the rights with his producing partner Alan Moloney, Murphy pitched the idea to Matt Damon, who formed a studio with Ben Affleck on the set of this film.

If Oppenheimer seemed like the grandest possible stage for Cillian Murphy as a cinematic giant, Small Things Like These seems like a showcase for his ability to convey the most complex emotions with the subtlest of facial expressions. It’s a very quiet film and so I found it so powerful in large part because of all the things you don’t see happening on screen. It’s very effective in the way it transports you to that time period and, speaking as someone who doesn’t really know anything about that part of history, I found it very authentic.
Small Things Like These feels like a passion project from start to finish, one that uses the simplest of filmmaking techniques to tell its story to great effect
As I said, it’s a very quiet film with minimal flashy imagery or dialogue and while it often worked, I couldn’t help but feel that it affected the pacing a little. For a film that’s only 90 minutes long, it felt longer, which in itself isn’t a bad thing, but I guess after the slow build-up, I think I would have liked a little more of the ending. I could understand that some people might find it too emotionally distant, but for my part I wanted to continue exploring the emotions I was trying to convey.
It’s not a film I’m rushing to rewatch, but it’s not a film that will abandon me anytime soon either
