With Cyrano de Bergerac (1950)

Story

An aspiring actor undergoes a radical medical procedure to transform his appearance. But his dream new face soon turns into a nightmare. Filmed over 22 days during the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown. [last lines; to Edward] Oswald: Oh my friend, you haven’t changed one iota.

Then he gets a new neighbor

“Edward” (Sebastian Stan) is a man with a disfigured face, stuck in a dilapidated apartment, whose life isn’t exactly going well. “Ingrid” (Renato Reinsve) is a writer who befriends him and promises him a role in her play. Meanwhile, his doctors manage to get him to undergo a radical treatment that gradually returns his face to a more normal one. Back in his apartment, and as rather grotesque things emerge from his leaking ceiling, he realizes that no one recognizes him anymore and that he must therefore assume a different identity.

He wants the part

Then he discovers that “Ingrid” is putting on a play – and old “Edward” is the title and subject. It’s his part. How can he get it without giving away the game? Add to his frustrations the arrival of “Oswald” (Adam Pearson) who is a seemingly decent character but also wants the part, and he has the aesthetics as opposed to the prosthetics.

Is it deserved or justified?

“Ingrid” has some tough choices to make, but where might that leave “Edward”? There’s something quite circular about the way this story unfolds. A kind of “be careful what you wish for” scenario that gives and takes away hope for “Edward” and almost creates a villain of the piece as well! The drama shines a light on society’s more superficial attitudes, our intolerances and assumptions, but it also tackles the fickleness of friendships, fame and success – all delivered quite engagingly by Stan and Pearson.

It’s the old man who positively exudes exasperation while the denouement (only vaguely) borders on the Chaplinesque

It’s on that note that it’s also quite funny at times – the writing doesn’t try to impose any morality on us, but rather presents us with scenarios and allows us to appreciate and evaluate as it goes. It doesn’t drag, and from the start we’re on track as characters develop, personalities emerge – for better or worse, and it’s well worth a few hours at the cinema. I got more out of it the second time around because I was able to focus a little more on the nuances than the imagery.
